Adapt or Die

Ironman 70.3 Gdynia. The race that should have been the A race of 2020 was postponed after months of uncertainty. Of course, this was after I had cancelled my race and moved it to Marbella 70.3. That’s right, I am racing Marbella 70.3 October 25th 2020.

I’ve been dealing with a few injuries over the last few months. A left knee / calf tweak after probably too many miles on the bike, and an achilles tweak after too many miles on the treadmill. The curse of lockdown training bit back in a big way. I was upset to say the least. Everything had been going so well, the mileage so solid, the base so deep. Everything, and I mean everything, was in perfect harmony. Threshold run pace at 3:16/km, bike FTP at roughly 330w, and swimming was well…there was none.

I think the main kicker was the lack of access to physios / massage and the normal recovery tools available to me. That, coupled with exam stress, lockdown stress, and not leaving my house for nearly 16 weeks probably took its toll.

However, things are back on the mend. The achilles tweak is gone, the knee tweak is still kind of there but going very gradually, and I am finally back in the water.

So, really, adapt or die. Get on with what you can, and don’t stop moving. Relentless forward progress is the name of the game.
